After Hurricane Dorian: Aiding our Friends in the Bahamas

September 09, 2019 by Mercedes Teasley

One week after Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas, relief efforts are still underway as nearly 70,000 people are in need of food and shelter. As of today, the death toll is up to 45 and expected to rise as officials continue to comb through miles of debris, mostly on Abaco and Grand Bahama -- the two worst affected islands -- in search of the hundreds still reported missing.

As government officials work to evacuate thousands to Nassau, which was largely untouched by the storm, there remains much to do before Bahamians can begin the process of rebuilding. Here’s what’s needed most right now:

    * As natural disasters disrupt normal operations for most businesses, same goes for blood, platelet and other types of donor operations. Disasters create an urgent need for blood donations of all types, you can find donation centers and get started here

    * Financial donations to support aide relief efforts can be made to the RedCross, Salvation Army, Americares, Mercy Corps, and the National Association of the Bahamas.

    * Animal rescue and care - Both, the Humane Society and ASPCA are requesting donations to assist with transportation, shelter and other disaster response efforts. Click their respective links above to give.

    * There are other ways to get involved; for additional ways to help, as well as tips to avoid scams, visit NBC’s Hurricane Dorian Relief Update Page here.

Our Bahamian friends and families are facing true crisis and in need of your love and support, please consider giving as any amount helps to save and rebuild lives.
