  • Must-Taste Guadeloupe Rhum Cocktails

    If you travel to Guadeloupe, one of the first things you may notice about the island is the abundance of rhum cocktail offerings on menus everywhere. Not only does every restaurant serve up the local favorite, Ti’ Punch, but rhum distilleries across the island allow you to taste a variety of the spirit in its purest form. On a recent trip to Guadeloupe, I fell in love with two different cocktails, so I purchased a bottle of Rhum Damoiseau to replicate these drinks back in New York. One sip of either of the recipes below will transport you right to this French Caribbean paradise!

    Ti’ Punch: Literally meaning small punch, this cocktail is most commonly found in the French Caribbean and is typically served as an aperitif.

    Ingredients:
    2 oz. Rhum Agricole
    Cane syrup
    Lime

    Directions:
    1. Mix rhum and cane syrup (to taste) in a small glass.
    2. Squeeze lime into mixture.
    3. Stir until cane syrup is dissolved.
    4. Add ice cubes and sip!

    Planteur: I found this cocktail on most menus in Guadeloupe as well, and it is so delicious! A Planteur is a rum punch made with fruit juices.

    Ingredients:
    2 oz. Rhum Agricole
    ¼ oz. grenadine
    2 oz. orange juice
    2 oz. pineapple juice
    2 oz. guava juice
    Orange slice and/or cherry for garnish
    Note: You can also substitute any juice with pineapple or passion fruit juice, just make sure mixture is 25% rhum, 75% fruit juice.

    Directions:
    1. Pour the rhum, grenadine and fruit juices into a mixing glass with ice.
    2. Shake well.
    3. Strain into a glass.
    4. Garnish with orange slice or cherry and serve.
